Having been born to older parents, I was always at “home” with elders. From as early an age as I can remember, my life was full of rich wisdom from relationships with older family members. Early on, my parents encouraged me to participate in situations that would build compassion, patience and a unique relatability to my elders. In addition to family settings, I also volunteered in local nursing homes throughout my youth, not knowing that the experience was laying the groundwork for my future profession. Years later, a part-time activity position turned into a fulltime passion and grew into a career that has filled me with purpose. It has been an honor to spend my professional life and energy in the service of seniors, as well as people living with dementia through the profession of Life Engagement. No other role in senior care has quite the same opportunity to enrich and increase quality of life and restore dignity. Setting the tone for respect shown to the residents, upholding high standards for quality programming and creating community enthusiasm and exuberance for life are all a part of the fabric of Life Engagement. Restoring “normal” to life through activities of daily habits of living gives people the chance to reconnect with who they are and have always been through experiences that validate and reflect their strengths and abilities. Acknowledging the universal truth that purpose is a key element in quality of life for each of us can help to bring meaning into the fabric of daily programming for those in senior care. A sincere desire and willingness to make lives better, motivates me each day to positively influence the lives of seniors, as well as those who love them. The words of the great American psychologist and philosopher, William James seem an appropriate motto for serving those who once cared for us: “Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.”
