Some people never feel passionate about their career path. I’m lucky. I’ve been able to pursue two passions – Digital Marketing and Higher Education. When I was an undergrad there was no Internet. The concept of Digital Marketing was more than a decade away. Fortunately, a liberal arts degree in communications and some dumb luck enabled me to embrace the ‘Dot Com’ boom and ride its wave and beyond. Digital Marketing is constantly changing and I’ve been able to see it from the agency, corporate and client perspective. Digital is THE driver of trends across all industries and understanding ways to leverage its power is critical. When it comes to Higher Education, there’s something invigorating about being on a college campus. Whether it’s leading a discussion as an instructor in an MBA capstone class or talking to a prospective student during their campus visit, I’ve been able to positively impact students at the high school, secondary and post-secondary levels. Helping a student make the biggest decision of their lives up to that point – which college is right for me – or seeing the light bulb go on over their head in a lecture that you’re giving is what makes working in Higher Education so gratifying. It’s great to know you are literally changing lives, one student at a time. Across both paths I’ve found there are constants – Honesty, Passion, Integrity, Transparency, and Relationship-Building. Taking the time to listen and learn and then making that connection is what it’s all about. It could be connecting a business to the proper Content Management System (CMS) or the right Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy that moves the needle. Or, for that student, connecting them to a college experience that will enable them to blossom and be challenged as they start their own career path. Making those connections is what motivates me and fuels my passions.
