AltaMed Health Services, a private nonprofit organization, is a major provider of health and human services in the Greater Los Angeles area and the largest Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) in the State of California. AltaMed's mission is to provide high quality, coordinated, comprehensive health and human services to the underserved in Southern California, with particular attention to Latino and multi-ethnic populations. AltaMed began as the East Los Angeles Barrio Free Clinic in 1969, a volunteer-staff storefront providing basic medical services. Today AltaMed's service area extends beyond East Los Angeles, to the Greater Los Angeles area and Orange County.
Nena has had a varied professional experience in the corporate, academic, and nonprofit sectors. Born in Spain to American diplomats, Nena speaks fluent Spanish and was educated in the U.K. Nena first arrived in the USA to live in Taos, New Mexico where she and her husband Ozzie Lalla started a protective apparel manufacturing business on the Navajo Reservation. This company received NASA’s prestigious “Small Business of the Year Award” for designing and manufacturing the astronauts’ inflight shuttle suits in the mid-1980s. After the sale of this corporation to W. L. Gore & Associates, Nena was employed at the University of New Mexico, where she contributed her writing and editing skills to an internationally recognized nanotechnology research team that developed microchips in what was then the emerging technology of high-speed connectivity. Moving to California in the late 1990s, Nena began work in the nonprofit sector. Nena has accumulated twenty years of expertise with academic and nonprofit management. In her current role as the Vice President of Operations at the AltaMed Institute for Health Equity, Nena oversees the Institute's five teams including Research, Medical Education, Family Medicine Residency, and the management of 120 research and service grants of approximately $110 million total worth, with an average of $30 million in new grant revenue each year. Nena is a passionate organizational developer, with a keen ability to identify resources, and to establish and cultivate relationships. At AltaMed, Nena is known for her ability to inspire and promote excellence, setting a pace that leads and challenges each individual with a sense of humor and a spirit of adventure. She is highly valued as a contributor through her ability to work across different strategic and business units in a company and considers teamwork and collaboration a key to her success. Nena was educated in England at an all girls public boarding school, and studied Art History at Bristol University. In 1995, Nena was honored with the New Mexico Storyteller award.
