Mission Health, based in Asheville, NC, is the state's sixth-largest health system and the region's only not-for-profit, independent community hospital system governed and managed exclusively in western North Carolina. In 2012 Mission Health was named one of the nation's Top 15 Health Systems by Thomson Reuters - the only health system in North Carolina to receive this recognition. Mission Health, which traces its roots in the region back to 1885, operates five hospitals, numerous outpatient and surgery centers, and the regional's only dedicated Level II trauma center. Its medical staff consists of more than 1,000 physicians and is certified in over 50 medical specialties and sub-specialities. Mission Health has seven Centers of Excellence: Cancer, Heart, Mission Children's Hospital, Neurosciences, Orthopedics, Traums and Women's Health. Mission Hospital, located in Asheville, is the system's flagship hospital and is licensed for 730 beds. It is the regional referral center for tertiary and quanternary care and is the busiest surgical hospital in North Carolina. It also includes Mission Children's Hospital - the regional's only children's hospital. Other Mission Health member hospitals include Angel Medical Center in Franklin, Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine, McDowell Hospital in Marion and Transylvania Regional Hospital in Brevard. With approximately 8,800 employees and 700 volunteers, Mission Health is dedicated to improving the health and wellness of the people of western North Carolina.

I am an internist/hospitalist by training, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and University Hospital Internal Medicine Residency, New Brunswick, NJ. Then onto the American College of Physician Executives training program as a Certified Physician Executive (CPE) and completed the Harvard Program on Negotiation for Senior Executives, Cambridge, MA. I’ve spent the last 20+ years at the Mission Health System, Asheville, NC during which time I have had some tremendous opportunities — built a robust Hospitalist Program, started Mission Medical Associates our employed provider group practice, built and managed our teleHealth program(s), built and managed our Staff Health and Occupational Medicine Program and for the past 11 years partnered with my health system colleagues, vendor partners and entrepreneurs to develop some truly innovative health care products. The acquisition of Mission Health by HCA, February 2019 closely followed by the worldwide SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has brought significant changes throughout healthcare and within the HCA-NC Division. Consolidating resources at HCA Corporate given the current economic stressors makes sense and I’m optimistic this will benefit all. I’ve taken this opportunity to get back closer to the beside at Mission Health with TeamHealth and the VAMC Asheville, NC as a hospitalist. Fortunately, I never left the beside so it was an easy transition and very rewarding. I feel very fortunate to have been a part of all and things we have accomplished here at Mission Health — they are cemented in history.
