Lifespan, Rhode Island's first health system, includes five partner hospitals with the mission of improving the health of the people of Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New England.

As Chief Information Officer for Lifespan, I am responsible for information systems and technology at Rhode Island's first and largest health system. Founded in 1994 by Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, Lifespan is now a comprehensive, integrated, academic health system affiliated with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Lifespan's other partners include Rhode Island Hospital's pediatric division, Hasbro Children's Hospital; Bradley Hospital; Newport Hospital; and Gateway Healthcare. Prior to joining Lifespan, I was the Chief Information Officer at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital and the Brigham and Women’s Physician Organization. I helped lead the implementation of the Epic systems across the family of Brigham and Women’s affiliated institutions within the enterprise implementation of Epic, branded as the Partners eCare project. This project replaced multiple administrative and clinical systems across Partners HealthCare with one of Epic’s largest big-bang implementations of its electronic health record and revenue cycle applications. I have also held several leadership positions in the healthcare IT industry with IDX Systems Corporation, Allscripts Healthcare Solutions and McKesson Health Solutions. After relocating to Rhode Island I spent nearly 10 years in CMIO and CIO roles at the Care New England Health System. My part-time clinical activities have included attending as a newborn nursery hospitalist and primary care pediatrician. In these setting I have supervised and taught pediatric residents and medical students as clinical faculty at Harvard Medical School and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. My particular areas of research interest and investigation in medical informatics include the effectiveness of automated in-process decision support to improve safety and quality of patient care.
