Whether you, your loved one, or your patient is dealing with a serious illness, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center offers Palliative Care services. Palliative Care consists of a team of doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other health care professionals who work to alleviate pain and suffering in patients with life threatening or life limiting illnesses. See "What is Palliative Care" for a more detailed definition. Palliative Care has been at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center (JHMC) since 2001. Initially, the program was a collaborative of health care professionals with the goal of improving the care of patients facing life threatening illnesses. In the spring of 2005, Dr. Roth and Dr. Basello began efforts to develop a dedicated Palliative Care Medical Consult Service. They received grant funding, and by the Fall of 2005, JHMC had the Acute Inpatient Palliative Care Consult Service up and running. Since that time, the Palliative Care Service has provided culturally sensitive care to many of the patients facing advanced chronic and/or terminal illnesses. Many of our patients have been underserved and received pain and symptom management, psychosocial support, and end of life care that they most likely would not have had access to. This July, we proudly began a Palliative Medicine fellowship program coordinated through the Department of Family Medicine. The Program is committed to the education and training of physician specialists dedicated to providing this level of care for seriously ill patients and their families. We look forward to expanding our Clinical Palliative Care Program to provide these services to our patients at our long term care facility as well as in the home.
