Co-founder and Lecturer in Media Studies
Birmingham City University is a modern university with around 22,500 students from 80 countries. The University has strong links with industry and the professions and an established track-record of providing quality higher education and professionally relevant research.
I am co-founder of AltCity.me, a high-impact social media/tech collaboration space in Beirut, and DevIneMedia/Hibr (www.hibr.me), a youth-run alternative citizen newspaper. I hold an MA in Journalism from the Lebanese University, and MA degrees (Information & Communication; Media, Languages, & Communication) from the University of Panthéon-Assas. I completed my PhD in Media Studies (with a specialization in Semiotics) from the University of Panthéon-Assas in Paris in 2012, and was a Lecturer at the American University of Beirut and the Lebanese American University teaching courses on Political Campaign Communication, Digital Activism for Social Change and Online Journalism. My research is focused on Arab media narratives from the establishment of Egyptian pan-Arab radio the Voice of the Arabs until the rise of political Islam with the Lebanese Hezbollah, mainly working on media coverages of the Arab-Israeli conflict and Hezbollah's media productions, including music videos and video games. I have recently joined the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research at Birmingham City University as a Senior Researcher in Media for Social Change in the MENA region.
