As The Arizona Republic's national politics editor, I direct coverage of national politics, Congress, immigration and border affairs and health care policy. Previously, I was The Republic's national political reporter and spent two years on the national campaign trail reporting on Sen. John McCain's unsuccessful bid for the White House. During the prolonged run-up to the 2008 election, I appeared as a guest on PBS's NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, ABC News Now, C-SPAN and assorted international, national, satellite and local radio programs including BBC World Service. I was part of The Republic's breaking news team whose coverage of the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting. The paper's "Tucson Tragedy" report also won the 2011 Scripps Howard Foundation breaking-news award. I covered Giffords as a member of Congress, and have written extensively about her shooting and its aftermath. I also contributed to The Republic's coverage of the June 30, 2013, Yarnell Hill Fire catastrophe that killed 19 firefighters. That coverage was a finalist for the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting. I was a reporter based in Washington, D.C., in 2001 and 2002 and covered major stories such as the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. From 2009 to 2018, I wrote a weekly Sunday column on national politics for The Republic. In 2013, the Huffington Post included me on its list of "Who To Follow For Immigration News On Twitter." Specialties: Arizona politics, presidential and congressional reporting, immigration policy reporting, John McCain and Gabrielle Giffords coverage
