I started my career as an EH&S pro working with the Site EH&S group at Pratt & Whitney’s East Hartford, CT facility as a Co-Op. My primary duties consisted of ensuring compliance of the respiratory protection program and managing the confined space program for the campus. As my Co-Op term ended, I was hired as a part time EH&S pro in the East Hartford Repair Operations, (EHRO) product center. EHRO is one of Pratt’s repair stations that is in the business of overhauling and repairing larger engine components. In EHRO my main priorities were managing the Industrial Hygiene program comprising of hearing conservation, qualitative and quantitative IH sampling, haz com, etc. When I was not working on IH programs, I was conducting incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action implementations. As time pasted and people moved on, I was hired on as a fulltime EH&S pro. As with any job, when your status changes so does your responsibilities. I continued IH, but I got more involved in risk assessments and waste minimization projects. I was more active in Kaizen events, acting as the EH&S point of contact. As EHRO went through its 3P transformation, so did I and went to work as the EH&S pro in the Connecticut Airfoil Repair Operations, (CARO) product center. CARO is one of Pratt’s overhaul and repairs facilities that salvages and refurbishes small airfoils. In getting to CARO, I was overwhelmed with the responsibilities of my fellow colleagues who had moved on to further there careers but I was up for the challenge. In CARO, I assumed the same responsibilities as I did in EHRO, but with addition of machine guarding, electrical safety, elevated work, ergonomics, and other safety programs. Since arriving a little over a year ago in CARO, it has gone through a tremendous transformation. It is truly a nicer, safer and happier place to work and I am glad to be part of it.
