I am a second-year JD candidate at the University of Nebraska College of Law with an expected graduation date of May 2017. While my legal interests are still being explored my undergraduate research focused on psychology and law, specifically issues relating to jury decision-making and perceptions of victims versus perpetrators in a courtroom setting. My passion for the law was sparked by this research and my experience so far at the UNL’s College of Law has only made me more interested in the applied legal process. My research focused on the application of psychology to issues within our legal system. Since entering law school it has become apparent to me that my skills and interest are a better fit within the courtroom, personally aiding individuals through the system. In my time at the law school I have learned it is necessary to look at the big picture and question it, dissect it, and break it down into elements that our system can mediate and resolve. I think my undergraduate education in psychology is paramount to my future success in this career. The practice of empirical research taught me to search for my own conclusions based on research and support, a commonality of what the legal profession calls for. Beyond my education, there are two distinct elements of my personality that will strengthen my success within the legal field. First, I am extremely consistent, but perhaps not in the traditional meaning of the word. I believe consistency is a strength in the application of law, how I view and apply rules and policy, with an awareness that all people should be treated fairly and consistently across the spectrum in our legal system. Second, I believe my continued desire to learn is an invaluable strength when practicing law.
