What do Bruce Jenner, Diane von Furstenberg, Darius Rucker, the cast of SNL, Jack Nicklaus, and His Eminence Cardinal Roger Mahoney have in common? They have no idea who I am. But I remember them! Each had a role in my early television commercials—one might even say in helping shape my career. Working with them, and so many others, I learned to extract the breakthrough insight. Concoct the big idea. And tell the compelling story across generations of content channels. In recent years, I earned a masters degree and guest lecturer/advisor position at Carnegie-Mellon’s school of design—a place where communications design, software engineering, and global precocity coalesce to produce a mind-boggling array of interactions among humans, machines, and the cosmos. Today, I craft 60-second television commercials and 6.5 second Vines; 90-count Tweets and 190-page corporate social responsibility reports; CEO speeches and employee communications programs. I was inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame in 2012. I’ve been called the most analytical and strategic creative person ever by one boss; another gave me a 12 in creativity on a range of one to five.
