As a member of the Goodwin Procter's Appellate Litigation Practice, Mr. Martin has experience arguing in the federal and state courts of appeal. His recent experience includes arguing before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and First Circuit in cases raising issues under the Clean Water Act and Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations, and arguing a case raising novel questions of constitutional law before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. His appellate experience encompasses a broad variety of substantive areas, including constitutional law, administrative law, patent law, environmental law, securities law, products liability law and consumer protection law. Before joining Goodwin Procter, Mr. Martin served as a law clerk for Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court and for Judge Laurence Silberman of the District of Columbia Circuit.In addition to his appellate practice, Mr. Martin regularly serves as lead counsel representing clients in complex civil matters in the trial courts and in arbitration. Recent examples of such work include representing clients in patent infringement litigation and in complex commercial disputes in the federal district courts and in arbitration. Mr. Martin also regularly represents clients in products liability litigation and in government and internal investigations. He has substantial experience participating in efforts at alternative dispute resolution and in negotiating patent license agreements.In 2010 Mr. Martin was named Deputy Independent Counsel by the Supreme Judicial Court to investigate patronage hiring and related wrongdoing within the Massachusetts Probation Department. The investigation culminated in a 308-page report that led the entire senior leadership of the Department to resign and led to other sweeping changes in state government employment practices.Specialties: appellate litigation; complex civil litigation; government and internal investigations
