They also help to explain why I've made a career of business development and marketing. I launched into my career in technical sales, initially with a start-up and then with a mature firm. I was successful because I got my hands dirty and consulted with my customers. This success led to a market development assignment where I was able to “do what the marketing managers wished they could do if they had more time.” This business development role was one of my favorite jobs over the course of my career. A subsequent role in global business management during the great recession taught humility, appreciation for my MBA education, and how to think in spreadsheets. Managing a support team where I was able to reshape technical support into a lead qualification and outbound “inside selling" team taught me CRM and how to be a human capital developer. A stint in market management for an existing business taught me how to find opportunities in large, mature markets. After all these experiences, I've realized my real passion is for great strategic marketing -- segmenting, targeting and positioning to your customers.
