Brown Advisory ( www.brownadvisory.com) is a full-service investment and advisory firm based in Baltimore. Since its founding as an affiliate of Alex. Brown & Sons in 1993, the firm has grown substantially and now has about $14 billion in separate account, mutual fund, and brokerage assets. Brown Advisory was purchased from BT Alex. Brown in 1998 and is now an independent firm owned primarily by its partners and directors.

I am the Chief Information Security Officer at Brown Advisory. I have 19 years of experience in security as both an individual contributor and an executive leader. I have worked in a broad range of security domains, and I am well versed in security programs that scale to extremely large networks, services, and enterprises. My in-depth experience spans services and infrastructure from the start of the Internet (AT&T WorldNet ISP), to the transition to full Internet Protocol (VoIP), to the current model of mobile-enabled cloud enterprises and services. I have been responsible for designing security to protect against the advanced attacks of the day – from server and network attacks to Dos/DDoS and Advanced Persistent Threats (APT). I established and lead the AT&T Security R&D Team that has a vision to out-innovate attackers. The team is inventing high-impact solutions that will protect against broad classes of attacks rather than chase individual exploits. We have a focus on the critical AT&T strategic priorities of mobile-first enterprise, mobility, cloud, and big data techniques to detect security events. We work collaboratively with the business units to deploy effective solutions. I have deep experience in continuous process improvement which is critical for maintaining high levels of security, and enterprises. I regularly convey difficult security concepts to higher-level executives and customers, and I have been trained in how to have effective discussions with media. My scope of responsibility includes security awareness and mobile device and app security. Security awareness has been completely revamped to use multimedia and humor to get critical messages to employees. This program has significantly reduced risky employee behavior to phishing emails.
