Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 26 years ago, Melissa is a respected and outspoken patient advocate, on a mission to bring patients into the dialogue with other stakeholders in the diabetes space. She has spoken on behalf of patients with government, payer, industry, regulatory, and health care provider groups. Sought after as a Key Opinion Leader in the Diabetes Online Community, she is known both for her high utilization of diabetes technology (and her thorough reviews of such both on her own blog SweetlyVoiced.com and writing as Tech Editor for the diabetes magazine ASweetLife.org) as well as for how she uses humor, performance, diabetes-themed music video parody (http://tiny.cc/dparodies), and her more than a dozen years experience as a voice teacher and professional singer to provide creative solutions for patient engagement.In 2015, she led Diabetes Hands Foundation as Interim Executive Director upon the departure of the organization’s founder, where she represented the organization in broader patient coalitions such as the Diabetes Advocacy Alliance and the Partners in Patient Health workgroups, as well as planned and facilitated its second annual Diabetes Advocates MasterLab Summit, which took place on July 7-8 in conjunction with the Friends for Life 2015 annual conference.In 2016, she joined Bigfoot Biomedical as Director of Community Relations, handling social media, communications, and public relations, as they work to bring an innovative insulin delivery system to market to ease the burden of insulin-dependent diabetes.
