Like most, all of my life I dreamed of a career in banking. Wait, who are we kidding? Let’s face it, there’s nothing inherently fun about working in financial services. And I’m still not entirely convinced that the thing our members (or customers) want the most from us isn’t simply to be invisible (approve my loan, process my card transaction, but otherwise just leave me alone and let me live my life). But that’s the challenge and the opportunity before us every day. How can we demonstrate value and continually differentiate ourselves in a commoditized industry? How can we keep employees engaged and excited through the many daily tasks that come between the occasional big victories, when someone lets us know that something we said, did or provided truly changed their life (if only briefly)? I must like that challenge, considering I’ve been doing it for about 30 years. And go Vikings! I've also just launched my first book project, which I'm very excited about.
