In my role as SVP and Chief Technology Officer at Applied Materials — a Fortune 100 global technology company and the world’s leading provider of equipment, technology, and process solutions for the semiconductor and display industries — I lead R&D and innovation-driven teams with a focus on growth in addressing disruption and enabling global inflections with materials engineering. I also serve as President of Applied Ventures, LLC, the venture capital arm of Applied Materials and one of the oldest and biggest corporate VC funds in the world. Under my leadership, Applied Ventures has invested over $350 million in 90 startups across 17 countries in all areas of deep tech, including semiconductors, display, AI/big data, Industry 4.0, ESG, 5G, electric vehicles, and life sciences. The pioneering value-added strategic partnerships that I’ve cultivated over the years with global academia, research institutes, customers, supply chain partners, and government funding agencies have led to the creation of: the Materials Engineering Technology Accelerator (META) Center with NY ESD and SUNY, the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations (CCNI) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) with the State of New York and IBM, and the New Jersey Nanotechnology Consortium (NJNC) at Bell Labs, the nation’s first nanotech PPP (public-private partnership). My experience in driving innovation and commercialization for transformational growth at large global corporations prior to Applied Materials includes tenures at Lucent Technologies and Agere Systems, world-class R&D laboratories (Bell Laboratories), and a global research university (RPI).
