I was curious about why there are so few women in the C-Suite and I wanted to know the current trends behind this theme. As a result, I learned the key roles in which both mentorship and sponsorship played into a career path into the C-Suite. During my research in 2017, the #MeToo movement initiated and a change in conversations emerged. Some men felt an increase in anxiety to mentor and sponsor women in the workplace while other men were overwhelmingly confident and secure in their capability. Based on the latter, I created a skills based training for cross-gender mentorship/sponsorship to address this and presented my paper at McDonough School of Business. With overwhelming support from the MSB faculty, I enrolled in Georgetown’s Diversity and Inclusion Certification program which I will complete in February 2019. My journey has just begun.
