Peter Tonge obtained his B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry at the University of Birmingham and then moved to the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in 1986 as a NATO-SERC postdoctoral fellow. After spells at NRC as a Research Associate and a Research Officer, followed by an appointment as a Staff Investigator at The Picower Institute for Medical Research, he joined the faculty at Stony Brook University in 1996 where he is currently a full Professor in the Department of Chemistry. He is also a Professor in the Department of Radiology (by courtesy) and Associate Editor for the American Chemical Society journal ACS Infectious Diseases. Peter Tonge is currently the Co-Director of the NIH-funded Chemical Biology Training Program and Cluster Lead of the Biomolecular Imaging Cluster. He is also the co-founder of Chronus Pharmaceuticals Inc (http://chronuspharmaceuticals.com/) which is creating superior disease diagnostics and drug candidates with improved efficacy by exploiting deep knowledge of metabolic pathways, focused metabolite detection, and slow-binding drug:target kinetics. In addition, he is the founding Director of the Center for Advanced Study of Drug Action (CASDA, http://casdaus.com) whose mission is to explore the mechanism of drug action with particular emphasis on the role that drug-target kinetics play in controlling drug activity in the non-equilibrium environment of the human body.
