The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) is one of the world's largest independent, not-for-profit organizations focusing on research in the biomedical sciences. Cary Thomas is a senior executive with extensive experience in higher education and research institute management, the design and deployment of financial, operational, and analytics software applications, and a highly successful consulting practice for high-profile clients. Cary is the Chief Information Officer at The Scripps Research Institute where he served as Senior Vice President for more than eight years. At Scripps Cary’s accomplishments include: implementation of the $450 million strategic plan for creation of the Scripps Florida Campus (constructing three research buildings, recruiting 60 faculty, meeting all required milestones and deadlines while accumulating a reserve of $100 million for future operations); implementation of a comprehensive Enterprise Resource Planning system (replacing a 17 year-old legacy system); developing sophisticated financial and operational reporting systems that provide real-time metrics to senior executives; and implementation of significant technologies for Scripps’ web presence, ubiquitous wireless access, improvements in High Performance Computing while centralizing IT operations to achieve significant savings. Prior to coming to Scripps, Cary held leadership positions in both public and private academic institutions: Senior Associate Dean for Administration and Finance at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine from 2004 to 2008; Chief Operating Officer for the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center from 2000 to 2004; Director for Administration and Finance at the Information Sciences Institute of the University of Southern California from 1991 to 2000; and Director for Administrative Information Systems at San Diego State University from 1989 to 1991.
