Southern College of Optometry was founded in 1932 in Memphis, Tennessee, and is one of only 21 schools and colleges of optometry in the United States. It is dedicated to the study of optometry, the field of medicine dedicated to not only the performance of refractive eye examinations and the fitting of necessary corrective lenses or vision therapy, but also the diagnosis and treatment of numerous ocular diseases. After completing a 4-year graduate program, students at SCO receive the degree of Doctor of Optometry (OD).

Bio

Dr. Alan Kabat is an honors graduate of Rutgers University and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He completed his residency training at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia. After several years in private practice, Dr. Kabat joined the ranks of academia as a faculty member at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. For over 20 years, he taught didactic and laboratory courses, provided clinical care as Attending Physician, and served in an administrative capacity as Director of both Externships and Residency Programs. Dr. Kabat left NSU in May of 2013 to accept an appointment as Professor at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. He currently serves as a staff physician in The Eye Center at SCO and is the Instructor of Record for the didactic course, Anterior Segment Ocular Disease. In addition to regular employment, he is a consultant to numerous pharmaceutical and medical technology companies within the eye care space. Dr. Kabat has published extensively in the optometric literature, and also serves in an editorial capacity for Review of Optometry, Optometric Office and Optometric Physician. Additionally, Dr. Kabat lectures regularly on topics of ocular and oculosystemic disease. He has been invited to speak in numerous venues in regions throughout the world, including Canada, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa.Specialties: Expert in anterior segment ocular disease, particularly disorders of the ocular surface.
