Research and teaching in the department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma, USA. (We're the Cowboys, not the Sooners.) In our lab, we apply principles of landscape ecology to advance conservation of native wildlife. We strive to learn how wildlife populations –– in particular those of non-game birds –– persist across human-dominated landscapes where they face habitat loss and fragmentation, degradation from unsuitable management, mortality from collisions with human structures, and an increasing frequency of weather extremes. I’ve been interested in wildlife (especially birds) for as long as I can remember. If there is one pervasive theme to my research, teaching, and personal life, it probably lies in my desire to share my enthusiasm for nature with others, and the hope that new-found empathy will spur greater awareness of, and dedication to, wildlife conservation.
