Founded in 1957, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) that is part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and operated under cooperative agreement by Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI). The NRAO has designed, built and operated several radio telescopes in the North American region, and is a major contributing partner with the design, construction and operation of the largest international radio telescope site to date, located in Chile, South America. Additionally, the NRAO built critical components for a successful satellite project launched by NASA. The field of radio astronomy has produced 6 Nobel Prize Laureates.
