Steve is a partner and at McCarthy Tetrault in Toronto, Canada and Chair of the National Intellectual Property Litigation Group . He is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer who has appeared in the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal, and the Superior and Appellate Courts of Ontario and British Columbia. He also practiced in the United States where he appeared in cases before the Northern District of California and the International Trade Commission. Some of Steve’s notable experience includes: ●lead counsel for the National Football League and Bell Canada in their successful challenge before the Supreme Court of Canada of the CRTC’s decision to ban simultaneous substitution of American commercials during the Super Bowl; ●representing Bell Canada and TELUS in a patent infringement action relating to their IPTV service; ●representing Bristol Myers Squibb in relation to ELIQUIS, its blockbuster Factor Xa inhibitor; ●secured one of the largest patent damages award in Canadian history on behalf of Merck against Apotex; ●represented Abbvie in Canada's first antibody engineering trial; ●represented Nickelback in a copyright infringement action relating to its song "Burn it to the Ground"; ●represented Sanofi in the Supreme Court of Canada in relation to the scope of damages under Canada's PM(NOC) Regulations ●represented an international group of copyright organizations in the high profile Aereo case before the United States Supreme Court; Steve is recognized as a leading IP litigator in numerous publications, including Chambers and has been named Canadian IP litigator of the year by Benchmark Litigation and LMG Life Sciences. Steve is an adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Faculty of Law where he has taught Intellectual Property Law for over a decade.
