Malvern Institute was originally founded as the C. Dudley Saul clinic in 1946, by Doctor C. Nelson Davis and Dr. C. Dudley Saul for the purpose of treating individuals suffering from alcoholism and psychiatric conditions. Dr. Saul restricted his efforts to alcoholism while Dr. Davis was concerned with larger problem of human behavior". Although Dr. Saul was a key factor in establishing the clinic, his health prevented him from setting foot in the clinic named in his honor. Dr. Davis assumed directorship. In 1948, the clinic became incorporated as a nonprofit corporation known as the C. Dudley Saul Research Foundation, Inc. and was located at the St. Luke's Hospital at 8th and Thompson Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It later moved to 133 South 36th Street in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The Foundation relocated again, this time to its current location in Malvern, Pennsylvania in scenic Chester County and became chartered as the Malvern Institute For Psychiatric and Alcohol Studies in 1949. It was during World War II while Dr. Davis was serving in the US Navy, that he became aware that recovery choices for alcoholism were extremely limited. Prior to this, alcoholics were treated in mental institutions and many died from delirium tremors while hospitalized. He dedicated himself to helping those most frowned upon by society.... the problem drinkers. He wanted to help the many individuals who were consigned to the streets and alleys of the city who were of poor circumstances and those who were affluent but hidden in prison-like institutions. Dr. Davis made the Institute his life's work. He acted as psychiatrist, administrator, public relations and researcher. He continued to develop and expand his treatment theories and traveled timelessly to publicize his work. He used his own money to keep his projects viable. A semi-private room in 1959 was $17 a day. Dr. Davis was a pioneer in the field of alcoholism in the Delaware Valley. He and his colleagues educated nurses, physicians and corpsmen that alcoholism is a disease and needs treatment. Malvern Institute and Chester County Hospital assisted each other with services for alcoholics in the 1960's and 1970's. Malvern Institute assisted in trainings for their healthcare professionals and Chester County Hospital provided Malvern Institute with laboratory and cardiology services. It was not until 1968 that Malvern Institute admitted their first female patient. After 34 groundbreaking years as Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Malvern Institute, Dr. Davis decided to retire. To keep Malvern Institute viable and progressive, a partnership was formed between Northwestern Institute of Psychiatry and Malvern Institute in 1980. Michael A. Arcuri, M. D. became Medical Director and eventually Executive Director after Dr Davis retired. Dr. Acuri expanded on the treatment program set up by Dr. Davis. to a 28-day model of treatment for alcoholism.
