I have the best job in the world. I work for Liquid Agency as Director of Transformation, meaning that I help some of the world's most amazing companies become even more amazing. I also get to share my expertise with the world at large—through books, workshops, and speaking engagements. My latest two books are METASKILLS, a manifesto of creative mastery in the 21st century, and THE 46 RULES OF GENIUS, a concise guide to the principles of innovation. I wasn't always an author. I began as a communication designer back in 1973, picking up writing, strategy, management, and publishing skills along the way. My first company, Neumeier Design Team, took on a wide variety of brand communication projects during its thirty-year history, from annual reports and brand identities to corporate ad campaigns and retail packaging. In 1996 we launched Critique, the magazine of design thinking. It was a wonderful, crazy thing to do. In 2003 I launched a think tank called Neutron to address the gulf between business management and design thinking. I've written two bestsellers on the subject, THE BRAND GAP (2003) and ZAG (2006). In 2009 I released a third book, THE DESIGNFUL COMPANY, about how business leaders can build a culture of nonstop innovation ("If you wanna innovate, you gotta design"). Neutron finally merged with Liquid Agency to create an end-to-end, top-to-bottom, inside out brand transformation firm. Together we help clients go from being "fast followers" to being true leaders in their categories. Our mission is nothing less than to revolutionize the way business does business in the 21st century. Like I said, best job in the world.
