I lead the London PI department of Irwin Mitchell as well as a team of 7 medical negligence solicitors. I also sit on the national medical negligence executive committee. My medical negligence practice specialises in birth injury and neonatal claims. My main expertise lies in cerebral and Erb’s palsy claims, as well as neonatal claims including hypoglycaemia; hyperbilirubinaemia and retinopathy of prematurity cases. I have also conducted a number of high profile multiparty actions: I represented families whose cases were considered in the Health Care Commission’s 2006 report into maternal deaths at Northwick Park Hospital; following the outbreak of endocarditis at the Trent Cardiac Centre in 2009, I represented nine families at the inquests and with the civil claims thereafter; In 2014, I represented the families of residents who had died at the Orchid View Care Home. In the last 12 months, I have secured multi million pound awards for a child injured at birth and a former Gurkha who suffered a spinal injury leaving him paraplegic. I have a sports injury practice providing advice to professional sportsmen on claims arising from substandard treatment provided by medical staff. In the last 12 months, I have received instructions from a number of professional rugby players associated with concussion and orthopaedic injuries. I am a panel member for the Rugby Players Association and has just settled a large claim for a former Premiership player whose career was ended through a concussion injury. I am a member of the Law Society’s Clinical Negligence panel and a Fellow of APIL. I co-authored the first 2 editions of the APIL Clinical Negligence guide and I run an annual programme of training courses on patient safety and clinical negligence public affairs matters.
