A leadership researcher, trainer, speaker, author, and industrial-organizational psychologist with a specialty of helping new and aspiring leaders, I am currently the Interim Vice President of Student Life at High Point University, after being the Director and Assistant Vice President of Career and Professional Development. My research interests are in multisource (360) research, first-time managers and new leaders, leader character and integrity, mentoring, derailment, organizational politics and political skill, communication, and empathy. I frequently speak on these topics in conferences and keynotes. I have more than 50 peer-reviewed publications (in such journals as the Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Personnel Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and The Leadership Quarterly) and have been featured in more than 50 Internet and news outlets (such as Forbes.com, the Wall Street Journal, CNN.com, Harvard Business Review, Chief Learning Officer, ChiefExecutive.net, Toastmasters, and TrainingIndustry.com, and businessweek.com [now Bloomberg]). I am also the author of the best-selling book, Be the Boss Everyone Wants to Work For: A Guide for New Leaders. As an educator, I have trained hundreds of new, aspiring, and well-seasoned leaders in leadership development programs, and I have taught college- and graduate-level courses as an adjunct professor at various colleges and universities. My loyalties to my alma maters are strong: proud graduate of The McCallie School, summa cum laude graduate of Emory University, and received my M.S. and his Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Georgia.
