Freedman started his career on Capitol Hill as an investigator on three high-profile Congressional investigations. From there he was an investigative stringer for the Washington Post, a Washington Correspondent for the Atlanta papers and then a network television producer for ABC News 20/20. Freedman went on to have a career in television and film in Los Angeles until he became involved in education in the mid 1990s when his first child started kindergarten. In 2011, Freedman founded the National Laboratory for Education Transformation (www.NLET.org), a California-based 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to transforming 20th century education into 21st century learning in mathematics, state data, student records and workforce. Freedman served as president and board member of NLET until March 2022 when the board appointed Dr. David Andrews, former president of National University and formerly dean of education at Johns Hopkins University and the Ohio State University. Freedman founded NLET to create an organization that looks three to five years into the future, acting as a broad social, research and organizational platform for the alignment of education and training with the technology of the knowledge economy and youth culture. Freedman formerly served as Vice President Global Education Strategy, Blackboard Inc. During his tenure, Freedman traveled to 19 countries examining learning models and policy strategies, launched the Blackboard Institute and provided thought leadership for the company globally. Freedman is the co-founder of the International School of Monterey, a K-8 California charter school, and is a former fellow at UC Berkeley Center for Studies in Higher Education and SRI.com. Freedman’s background in film and television included producing at ABC News in Washington, DC and as as an executive producer in Los Angeles.
